As we begin the new year, we focus on trends and insights that will impact the O&P profession this year and in the future. From research that could transition to practical application to increasing application of 3D printing and osseointegration (OI), there are a variety of exciting developments on the horizon.
While it’s impossible to cover all the newest advancements in technology and clinical practice, “Trends in O&P: Technology and Research Move Ahead for Better Patient Care” looks at a few areas that are making waves in the profession. Two things that have been gaining traction for a while and continue to drive the profession are the focus on outcomes as validation for O&P interventions and the emergence of clinical practice guidelines in O&P, which have long been common in other healthcare disciplines. Another exciting area explored in this article is knowledge transfer from the lab environment into real-world testing, with commercial developments of devices incorporating such features as touch sensors and neurotechnology. 3D printing, once viewed largely with skepticism in the profession, is also coming into its own as it’s incorporated as the key element in business models for the production of new products.
