This month O&P professionals will gather at the American Academy of Orthotists and Prosthetists (the Academy) Annual Meeting & Scientific Symposium to learn about best practices, recent research, and new technologies and techniques. In keeping with those themes, in this edition we discuss O&P education, proposed policy decisions based on evidence-based care, and best practices for antispasticity contracture bracing.
Most of you are familiar with the traditional educational assessment methods with percentages and letter grades—which might have been either a source of celebration or dread when report cards came out. While this evaluation method provides some standardization, it rarely accurately reflects the student’s mastery of a subject (particularly in the skill-based areas crucial to O&P education) and can actually interfere with his or her intrinsic interest in learning. “Grading, Assessment, and Motivation to Learn” suggests alternate ways of measuring student performance that can improve learning outcomes.
