Footcare Professionals Convene for PFA’s 55th Annual Symposium

The Pedorthic Footcare Association (PFA) held its 55 th Annual Symposium & Exhibition in Orlando, Florida, October 24-26. Attendees had the chance to earn continuing education credits by attending business and scientific programming, visiting the 70 exhibitor booths, and socializing with their colleagues.

With a focus on helping pedorthists not only survive, but thrive, the Symposium's business-related courses focused on marketing strategies, regulatory compliance, and billing procedures. For example, Melodie Phillips, PhD, and Aaron J. Sorenson, CPO, presented a pre-symposium workshop detailing how pedorthic businesses can leverage social media to reach current and prospective patients. From a scientific perspective, Géza Kogler, PhD, CO/L, BCO, LPed, discussed preliminary results from research studies that support the value of orthotic and pedorthic interventions in his presentation, "Pathways to Empower Pedorthics."

Earlier this year PFA announced that its 2015 Annual Symposium will be held in conjunction with the American Podiatric Medical Association (APMA) Annual Scientific Meeting and will combine educational programming from both disciplines. The PFA immediate past president, Jay Zaffater, CPed, BOCP, reported that representatives from APMA attended this year's symposium and were impressed by the quality of the exhibitors and educational offerings, among which were "Pedal Evidence," by Bryan Kagan, DPM, who discussed the application of forensic podiatry principles to the pedorthic evaluation of footwear; and "Complications of Diabetic Neuropathy: What Everyone Should Know," by Allison Garten, DPM, CPed. Garten defined diabetic neuropathy and reviewed both podiatric and pedorthic treatments that can help prevent the condition from leading to limb loss.

The PFA 56 th Annual Symposium & Exhibition/APMA Annual Scientific Meeting is slated for July 23-26, 2015, at the Orlando World Center Marriott, Florida.
