Motocross Champions Crowned at Ninth Annual Extremity Games [caption id="" align="alignnone" width="362"] Gomez catches some air. He scored 2-3 in his motos trading wins with Glissen, who scored 3-2 to take second place.[/caption] Adaptive athletes came from coast to coast to compete in the Extremity Games 9 motocross race on May 24 at Baja Acres Motocross Park, Millington, Michigan. Baja Acres hosted the event as part of its Memorial Day race weekend. Champions were crowned in three categories: AMP - Lower Extremity, AMP - Upper Extremity, and PARA (seated). The three divisions gated together with a staggered start. The Lower Extremity division took off first, followed by the Upper Extremity division, with the PARA division last. Returning 2013 champion Max Gomez took first in both of his motos to win the Lower Extremity division. Drake Smeltz also scored first in each of his motos to claim the top spot on the podium for the Upper Extremity division. In the PARA class, 2012 champion Jesse Gildea came back after sitting out the 2013 race to reclaim a gold medal, also scoring 1-1. "The track was in perfect condition, very well watered, and in typical Baja Acres fashion, the track got rough and whooped out," said Harold Glissen, who took second in the Upper Extremity division. Glissen returned for a second consecutive year. He was instrumental in starting the Upper Extremity division, which debuted last year. Glissen said he crashed during practice and, despite sore ribs, lined up at the gate with the rest of the racers and completed both motos. "Extremity Games is a great thing," said Max Gomez. "These guys don't get enough credit for the things they do. Riding with all your body parts is difficult as it is but to have missing ones and still be able to perform on a bike is incredible." Photograph courtesy of OPAF and the First Clinics.[/caption] OPAF and the First Clinics held a First Swing Learn to Golf Clinic on Saturday, April 26, at Vantage Point Golf Center, Cordova, Tennessee. The event, which was hosted by CFI Prosthetics- Orthotics, Memphis, Tennessee, drew more than 75 participants, their family and friends, and healthcare providers and golf instructors. The morning session was for area therapists, practitioners, and golf instructors who were interested in adaptive golf and recreation. They were schooled in both equipment and techniques for golf instruction for those with physical challenges. They were also offered the chance to face some of those same challenges by hitting a golf ball from a seated position, with one hand, or while standing on one leg. The morning instruction was led by National Amputee Golf First Swing Instructor Don Zommer, and he was assisted by Vantage Point's owner, Brittany Thompson.
