Carlton Fillauer, CPO, Fillauer Inc., Chattanooga, Tennessee, died April 8 at the age of 82. Mr. Fillauer was an O&P pioneer, advancing the profession through strong support of its national organizations. He was among the first class of practitioners to be certified by the American Board for Certification in Orthotics and Prosthetics (ABC) and was a charter member of the American Academy of Orthotists and Prosthetists (AAOP). From 1957 to 1958, Mr. Fillauer served as president of ABC. He served as president of the American Orthotic and Prosthetic Association (AOPA) from 1962 to 1963. Mr. Fillauer supported the development of O&P educational programs and was adjunct instructor for short-term courses at New York University and Northwestern University. He also developed many products that improved quality of life for O&P patients. "A prominent figure in the O&P industry, Carlton was recognized for his many achievements," said AOPA President David C. Schultz, CPO. "AOPA bestowed him with its Lifetime Achievement Award in 1997. In 1991, the Academy awarded him its highest honor, the Titus-Ferguson Award. He added, "On behalf of the AOPA Board and Executive Committee, I express our condolences and sadness at his passing."
