Academy’s Career Website

A one-stop website with practically all the information students and others interested in a career in orthotics and prosthetics would need is now available at www.opcareers.org .

The website includes information about entering the profession; what it takes (the ideal candidate); educational pathways, including baccalaureate programs, certificate programs, schools, prerequisites, selection criteria, and scholarships; practitioner profiles; O&P technology; and employment opportunities.

As part of the Quantum Leap initiative of the American Academy of Orthotists and Prosthetists (AAOP), the website is a product of the Joint Committee on O&P Awareness, formed last March at the Academy's Annual Meeting. The committee outlined a series of activities to ultimately increase the number of student applicants by 10 percent, according to Academy Executive Director Thomas Gorski, CAE. Funding for the projects is expected to come from the Academy's government grant, O&P Education and Development Fund through the Project Quantum Leap initiative, and the Academy, Gorski said.

Some of these other activities include:

A color brochure about the profession to be sent to high school counselors pointing students to the website (Copies are available from the Academy); A demonstration project during the Academy's 2003 Annual Meeting in San Diego in which high school students are invited to hear a short presentation about O&P, are paired with college students from California State University-Dominguez Hills and Rancho Los Amigos, and tour the exhibit hall; Creation of a slide presentation in PowerPoint for practitioners who participate in local Career Fairs or job-shadowing programs; and Working with the US Department of Labor to provide information about the profession for the Occupational Outlook Handbook and related electronic resources. The Joint Committee is chaired by Academy Board Member Wendy Beattie, CPO, FAAOP, and includes representatives from other O&P organizations: Joel Kempfer, CP, FAAOP, Orthotic & Prosthetic Assistance Fund (OPAF); Robin Seabrook, National Commission on Orthotic and Prosthetic Education (NCOPE); Robert Lin, CPO, FAAOP, and Scott Hornbeak, CPO, FAAOP, National Association of Prosthetic -Orthotic Educators (NAPOE); Charles Pritham, CPO, FAAOP, American Orthotic and Prosthetic Association (AOPA); Jan Stokosa, CP, National Association for the Advancement of Orthotics and Prosthetics (NAAOP); and Thomas Coakley, American Board for Certification in Orthotics and Prosthetics (ABC).
