About 750 Hanger employees from 44 states and the District of Columbia, along with over 270 vendor representatives from over 110 companies, converged on the event.

Carrying out the theme "Growth through Clinical Excellence and Technology," courses included stance control orthotic knee joints; microprocessor-controlled prosthetic componentry, such as the Endolite Adaptive Knee and Otto Bock C-Leg; advanced lower-extremity prosthetic considerations; pedorthic footwear general shoe modifications; and manufacturers' workshops, among many others. Introduced at the Education Fair was a new proprietary scanning technology, which, combined with Hanger's CAD/CAM technology, provides an alternative to plaster casting.

Advanced Socket Design Course A highlight was what may be considered the most comprehensive and detailed advanced upper-extremity socket design course ever presented to the field. Randall Alley, BSc, CP, FAAOP, compared traditional designs to those that he noted are biomechanically superior, since they utilize the latest advancements in anatomical contouring. Alley also created the first step-by-step biomechanically based practitioner resource manual with detailed instructions from casting to fabrication of the ACCI (transradial socket) design.

Also included were business-related sessions, such as orthotic and prosthetic coding classes, practice manager business training, and what is involved with being a public company.

Yeongchi Wu, MD, Honored "A physician by profession, a prosthetist by research, and a sculptor at heart." Thus the Center for International Rehabilitation (CIR) describes Yeongchi Wu, MD, CIR director of research and recipient of Hanger P&O's Lifetime Achievement Award. In a surprise presentation during the course on advanced lower-extremity prosthetic considerations, Dr. Wu was honored for helping persons with limb loss in developing nations and for pioneering new technology. The award was presented by Kevin Carroll, CP. Also involved in the presentation were Hanger Chairman and CEO Ivan "Van" R. Sabel, CPO, and Paddy Rossbach, RN, president and CEO of the Amputee Coalition of America (ACA). Dr. Wu seemed very surprised and humble at the unexpected recognition.

After serving as attending physician for 20 years and as director of the Amputee Rehabilitation program for 15 years at the Rehabilitation Institute of Chicago (RIC), Dr. Wu joined CIR and Physicians Against Land Mines (PALM) to pursue research and development of prosthetic technology for low-income countries. Besides prosthetic art and science, the fine arts have an important place in his life with his work and interest in sculpture, painting, architecture, and photography.

"This year's Education Fair showcased all of the accomplishments that Hanger has achieved in the past 24 months," said Ivan R. Sabel. "Attendance at the Education Fair was an all-time high&this allowed me to see firsthand the energy and excitement throughout the organization."

Sabel announced good news for Hanger offices and practitioners: a record incentive bonus payment based on estimated 2002 financial results. "Over 80 percent of our practices and practitioners will receive 2002 incentive bonus payments as a result of high practitioner productivity and low turnover," he said.
