Through high mountains, flat plains, rolling hills, big-city glitz and rural America, wild and desolate landscapes, cozy small towns where time seems to stand still-one amputee cyclist has traveled them all. Dan Sheret, 41, Wilmington, North Carolina, is the first amputee to join the "America by Bicycle" cross-country tour. He averages 80 miles a day with 45 able-bodied riders on a 52-day, 3,800-mile trek from San Francisco, California, to Portsmouth, New Hampshire. The odyssey began June 7 and is expected to end July 29. Sheret's trip is intended to raise awareness about the Ertl surgical amputation procedure and the Barr Foundation, a nonprofit organization dedicated to improving lives of amputees worldwide. The Ertl procedure was developed by Professor Janos Ertl Sr., MD, in Hungary. Through clinical observations and using regenerative surgical principles, Janos Ertl sought to establish a pain-free residual limb that would participate more effectively in ambulation. The procedure is now carried out by his grandsons, Jan Ertl, MD, Kaiser, Sacramento, California, and William Ertl, MD, University of Oklahoma Health Sciences Center, Oklahoma City. Sheret uses the Harmony® Socket Enhancement System from Otto Bock Health Care, and found that in his first day of wearing it, he was able to double his riding distance from 10 miles to 20. Nine months later, he is thrilled to be averaging 80 miles a day. To follow Dan Sheret's trip across the continent, read his journal at www.ampu-cycle.com.
