It's not every day that someone gets to have dinner with a television celebrity and tour his home. And it's even more unusual to find out that he practically lives around the corner from you! This was the recent experience of Micki Pawlowski, founder and president of "A Fitting Image," the postmastectomy care division of Calumet Orthopedic & Prosthetics Co., Hobart, Indiana. Micki's "excellent TV adventure" began when Michael Essany, host of E! Entertainment Television's Michael Essany Show, appeared as a celebrity waiter at the second annual Breast Cancer Awareness Tea held in Merrillville, Indiana. Essany, a Valparaiso, Indiana, University junior and talk show host, served more than 400 area residents, medical experts, and community leaders at the educational and fundraising event. Dinner and a tour of Essany's home-turned-studio were auctioned during the tea with proceeds going to breast cancer research and education initiatives. Micki was the successful bidder and visited Essany recently on the "set." She was surprised to find that Michael Essany's parents' home-the "studio" where Michael both lives and works-is so close to her own home that she actually saw the house being built about 14 years ago, as she walked her dog in the neighborhood. Michael Essany, a junior at Valparaiso University, has dreamed since childhood of being a talk show host and his imaginative, funny show is now in its second season on E! Entertainment Television. Celebrities appearing with the nation's youngest talk show host include Kevin Bacon, Jewel, Tom Green, Rosie O'Donnell, Kelly Rowland, Michael Ian Black, David Brenner, and Weird Al Yankovic, among others. The stars are surprised when their limousines pull up at a pleasant home in a Midwest setting of rolling hills and lush trees-very different from New York and Hollywood. Michael also has appeared on Jay Leno, Oprah Winfrey, and the Today show, among others. His talk show is especially popular with viewers in Great Britain and Australia. Micki enjoyed a fun evening with Michael, his parents Ernest and Tina, and some of their friends and later toured the house. Micki is impressed with Essany's enthusiasm and dedication and feels he'll hit the big time and make his dream come true. "And if Mel Gibson ever appears on his show, I'll come knocking on his door," she jokes. Micki and her husband, Ron Pawlowski, CPO, own Calumet Orthopedic & Prosthetics Co., which has been serving children and adults with disabilities for 50 years.
