Academy's Online Learning Center Goes Live

The American Academy of Orthotists & Prosthetists (AAOP) has begun its new Online Learning Center to enable practitioners to access educational programming year around from home or office.

Academy President Donald E. Katz, CO, FAAOP, presented the new program during the Academy's recent Annual Meeting and Scientific Symposium in New Orleans, Louisiana.

"We recognize the need to travel for continuing education units can be an expensive venture, or simply isn't always possible," Katz said. "Thus, this is also geared toward providing affordable PCE credits without compromising the level of education you require and deserve."

An ever-expanding variety of topics will be available, Katz said, adding, "As our library of modules increases, the Academy will create multiple channels to house various topics or selections of modules presented by various educators or manufacturers."

How To Use the System To use the system, practitioners can log onto the Academy website, www.oandp.org , and then click on the Academy Online Learning Center link. After signing in with a username and password, users can add credits to their accounts with a credit card. They then select an educational module to view, wait for it to load, and then click "play" to start the module. Some modules may require additional reading or research, which will be available through integrated links to the source.

Earning Credits Fast After completing a module, the practitioner will be presented with an online test to obtain continuing education credits. Course completion information will be sent directly to the American Board for Certification in Orthotics & Prosthetics (ABC), thus instantly earning credits toward certification, registration, or license. Also, after successfully completing a module, a personalized certificate will be printable at the practitioner's computer and suitable for framing and displaying in an office, study, or elsewhere.

"As a bonus, you will keep the learning module," Katz said. "This will allow you to go back at any time and view the material." Once viewed, the module will become part of the practitioner's personal education library on his or her computer. "You can review the content as often as you like prior to taking the quiz to test your knowledge of a given subject," Katz added. "You'll also be able to view a list of all modules that you've successfully completed."

Modules Being Developed To jumpstart the development of modules, the Academy is converting some of the presentations from the annual meeting into electronic modules for the Online Learning Center. Much effort is being put into developing this series as "a first-class system for the O&P professional," Katz said, adding, "By establishing partnerships with educators and leading companies in the industry, this online system will become the one place that you can go for all of your online education needs." Katz invited those who would like to share their knowledge through the Online Learning Center to contact the Academy.
