In a June 22 article in USA TODAY, the Supreme Court justices
unanimously ruled against two Texas patients claiming negligence
caused by denial of coverage by their HMOs, leading to emergency
treatment. As stated in the article, Monday’s court decision that
patients cannot use state laws to sue HMOs for medical negligence
could affect millions of patients and increase pressure on Congress
to figure out how to hold insurers accountable for harmful medical
decisions.
