ABC, Cailor Fleming Join Forces for Insurance

Cailor Fleming Insurance, effective August 1, 2004, has signed an exclusive contract with a new property and liability insurance carrier, Penn America, an A-rated insurance company based in Hatboro, Pennsylvania, according to Don Foley, O&P account executive for the Youngstown, Ohio-based agency. Cailor Fleming provides coverage for professional liability, general liability, products liability, employment practices liability, workers compensation, property coverage, and business auto coverage.

The agency also offers group health insurance. "This is a market we are active in regionally," Foley said, "and are looking to expand nationally."

Cailor Fleming's program is geared to the specific needs of O&P practitioners and facilities, as differentiated from durable medical equipment suppliers (DME) alone, Foley pointed out. The company also has partnered with the American Board for Certification (ABC) and Scott Williamson, director, Facility Accreditation, to encourage more O&P facilities to become ABC-accredited. Insurance discounts of up to 10 percent are offered to ABC-accredited facilities. "If you fulfill higher standards in your facility, it logically follows that your claims are likely to be less," Foley explained. "Clients who utilize risk management, proper documentation, and a safe, hazard-free working environment will enable us to continue providing high-quality, competitively priced coverage to the O&P industry."

The insurance marketplace is in a constant state of flex, noted Jeff Michalenok, president of Cailor Fleming. "Insurance companies come and goit's not due to the O&P industry; it's just a fact of life in insurance," he explained, noting that recently other major insurance providers to the O&P industry have needed to sign on with new carriers.

However, the insurance agency and agent that work with the insurance carriers are the vital factors in the equation, Michalenok added. "That is why Cailor Fleming as an agency strives to remain the resource to look to in O&P." Responsiveness to clients' needs is the company's cornerstone, as it looks to provide high-quality services to clients in all areas: answering questions promptly and accurately; providing certificates of insurance; and handling claims in a timely way, Michalenok said.

"Insurance isn't something where clients wake up in the morning saying, 'I can't wait to read my insurance policy or call my agent,' but it's a necessary part of keeping the business running, of being able to turn the key in the lock and go to work," he continued. "At Cailor Fleming, we try to make the process as clear, logical, and painless as possible."

Michalenok has presented sessions on risk management and proper documentation at several state chapter meetings of the American Academy of Orthotists & Prosthetists and other professional meetings. "It's part of our service," he said. "I enjoy doing it and look forward to doing more if possible."

Both ABC and the Board for Orthotist/Prosthetist Certification (BOC) recommend Cailor Fleming as the agency call when members ask for insurance information and quotes, Foley said.

Cailor Fleming has two customer service agents, Melanie Maruskin and Mary Ann Lapinski, who focus exclusively on O&P clients. Claims manager is Janet Dyer.

Cailor Fleming will be exhibiting at the American Orthotic & Prosthetic Association (AOPA) National Assembly September 20-23 in Hollywood, Florida, in Booth No. 502.
