Academy Calls for Award Nominations

The American Academy of Orthotists and Prosthetists (the Academy) has announced its call for nominations for the 2006 Academy Awards. Deadline for nominations is December 1.

Each year the Academy recognizes members and others who have made significant contributions to the O&P profession. The Academy Awards are presented at the Academy's Annual Meeting, which in 2006 will be held March 1-4 in Chicago, Illinois.

The Academy notes that persons being nominated for awards must be Academy members, except nominees for the Honorary Membership Award, Clinical Creativity Award, and Mohamed Amin Award. However, anyone may nominate an individual for an Award, according to the Academy; they are not required be Academy members.

The Academy gives these instructions for nominating someone for an award: submit their name, contact information, and a letter indicating which award they should receive and why, to nominations@oandp.org

The awards include:

1) The Titus-Ferguson Award: A lifetime achievement award intended to be the highest level of recognition bestowed upon an Academy member whose accomplishments and contributions have made a significant impact on the growth and development of the profession;

2) Distinguished Practitioner Award: Recognizes members who have distinguished themselves through their personal dedication and leadership to the advancement of the O&P profession;

3) Honorary Membership Award: Recognizes individuals who are closely allied with the O&P profession, but who are not practitioners certified by the American Board for Certification in Orthotics and Prosthetics (ABC). The recipient of this award should have demonstrated a very high level of knowledge and a dedication to the O&P field;

4) Clinical Commitment Award: Recognizes those Academy members who have quietly demonstrated a commitment to the ABC Canons of Ethical Conduct and to improving the professional image of the orthotic and prosthetic profession to patients, co-workers, and colleagues;

5) Outstanding Educator Award: Presented to an educator who has been associated with at least one of the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP)- or National Commission on Orthotic-Prosthetic Education (NCOPE)-accredited educational programs. This educator must have demonstrated unique didactic or laboratory skills which create a positive and permanent impression on students;

6) Clinical Creativity Award: Recognizes those individuals who demonstrate high levels of creativity in process or device development that improve orthotic and/or prosthetic patient care;

7) Research Award: Recognizes those members performing outstanding research in the field of orthotics and prosthetics within the previous three years; and

8) The Mohamed Amin Award for Humanitarian Service: The Board may, at its discretion, honor an outstanding physically disabled individual who has demonstrated the ability to significantly influence and promote the advancement of human welfare through his or her philanthropic, vocational, or avocational activities. This person must be under the care of an Academy member practitioner.
