ACA Offers First Step Spanish Edition

In response to requests, the Amputee Coalition of America (ACA) is now offering the 2005 Spanish edition of First Step , which the ACA calls "the essential guide for Hispanic/Latino people who are coping with the challenges of limb loss," ACA announced recently.

According to 2002 US Census Bureau data, there are 37.4 million people of Hispanic heritage in the US, representing 13.3 percent of the population. On average, Hispanic/Latino Americans are 1.5 times more likely to have diabetes than non-Hispanic whites of similar age, the ACA observed, noting that that more than 60 percent of non-traumatic lower-limb amputations occur in people with diabetes (about 82,000 non-traumatic amputations were performed on people with diabetes in 2002). According to the ACA, "This publication is designed to meet a growing need by:

" Improving the quality of patient care for Hispanic/Latinos who undergo an amputation,

" Improving the psychosocial and rehabilitation outcomes for Hispanic/Latino amputees, and

" Providing educational materials to prevent secondary conditions and primary amputations."

The Spanish edition of First Step was introduced during a presentation at the National Association of Hispanic Nurses Annual Conference held July 2006 in Phoenix, Arizona.

"Published by the ACA and funded by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the Spanish edition of First Step offers 132 pages of reliable information on questions that have been frequently raised by amputees attempting to make informed choices, get better services, or decide on available options," the ACA said. The publication for new or prospective amputees, family members, and the medical team, is divided into these sections:

" The New Experience of Limb Loss

" Dealing With Your Emotions

" Rehabilitation: Learning to Live Again

" Insurance, Funding & Employment

" Preventing Secondary Conditions

" Resources

"Although there is no charge for the Spanish edition of First Step , ACA must charge a nominal shipping and handling fee for this valuable resource," the organization noted.
