Benchmark Medical Names New Chairman and CEO

The Board of Directors of Benchmark Medical Inc., headquartered in Malvern, Pennsylvania, has appointed William R. Floyd as chairman and chief executive officer, the company announced recently.

Floyd's extensive leadership experience running major healthcare and consumer-oriented businesses over the past 15 years makes him the ideal leader for Benchmark, the company said.

"I believe Benchmark Medical is on the cusp of becoming a leading player in the healthcare industry," Floyd said, "and I am both honored and thrilled to be leading the organization at this important time."

Benchmark's former CEO, Lance Piccolo, introduced Floyd to the company's employees as an "exceptional proven leader" whose "hands-on style" is critical for Benchmark to reach its potential. Piccolo, who will continue to serve on Benchmark's Board of Directors, was the company's chairman and CEO from 2004 through 2006.

Prior to joining Benchmark, Floyd served as chairman, president, and chief executive officer of Beverly Enterprises, based in Ft. Smith, Arkansas, a major provider of long-term care, hospice, and home health services in the United States. He joined Beverly as president in 2000 and was named chairman and CEO in December 2001.

Floyd's management experience extends beyond the healthcare industry, Benchmark noted. From 1996-1998 he served as the president and CEO for Choice Hotels International, Silver Spring, Maryland, the parent company of such hotel brands as Comfort Inn, Econo Lodge, MainStay Suites, Clarion hotels, and Quality hotels. Floyd also held several leadership positions at PepsiCo Inc., Purchase, New York, from 1989-1996, including chief operations officer for Kentucky Fried Chicken, based in Louisville, Kentucky (1994-1995), and Taco Bell, based in Irvine, California (1992-1996). These two companies were spun offfrom PepsiCo in 1997.

Earlier in his career, Floyd worked in a variety of marketing roles at Pillsbury, Minneapolis, Minnesota; Gillette, Boston, Massachusetts; and The Beech-Nut Nutrition Corporation, St. Louis, Missouri.

Floyd currently serves as chairman of the Board of Trustees of Valley Forge Military Academy and is also on the Board of Philadelphia Outward Bound. He is a board member of Fired Up, Austin, Texas, a casual dining restaurant chain, and is a past member of the Board of Hanger Prosthetics & Orthotics, Bethesda, Maryland.

Floyd earned a bachelor's degree from the University of Pennsylvania in 1967 and his MBA from the Wharton School in 1969.

Benchmark provides physical therapy, occupational therapy, industrial rehabilitation, and several other specialty therapy services at more than 350 locations, plus the company includes an orthotics and prosthetics division offering O&P care at about 30 locations.
