Rex Bowman, BOCO, CPed, Leicester, North Carolina, died December 25, 2006, from an apparent heart attack, reported the Board for Orthotist/Prosthetist Certification (BOC). "Rex served BOC for many years, was an active volunteer for a decade on the Item Writers Committee, and was elected in 2003 to the Board of Directors," said Trisha Tatam, BOC director of communication. "In addition to being available to staffthe BOC booth at any tradeshow--most recently the PFA [Pedorthic Footwear Association] in Atlanta, Rex was a valuable committee member, level-headed, and willing to listen to all sides." Bowman received his orthotist certification from BOC during the 1980s while serving in the U.S. Army. Later, he also received certification as a pedorthist from the Board for Certification in Pedorthics (BCP). "Rex mentored many orthotists and CPeds in his long career in the Army and later in Asheville," Tatam said. "Our heartfelt sympathies go out to his family and friends." Bowman was born in 1952, the son of Edith Kathleen Burchell Bowman of Ft. Worth, Texas, and the late William Trimble, according to an obituary December 28 in the Asheville Citizen-Times, Asheville, North Carolina. He retired from the U.S. Army after 22 years of service and more recently had worked as director of Orthotics for 15 years at Orthopedic Appliance Company in Asheville. In addition to his mother, he is survived by his wife, Karin Climer Bowman of Leicester; two daughters: DeDe Bolke and her husband Kevin of Colorado Springs, Colorado, and Billie Merriman of Arden, North Carolina; five grandchildren: Morgan, Tanner, Max, Benjamin, and Nicholas; a sister: Bonnie Buettner and husband Karl of Canoga Park, California; and a brother: William Bowman of Ft. Worth. Services were held December 29 in the chapel of Groce Funeral Home in Arden. Burial followed in the Western Carolina State Veterans Cemetery with military honors being conducted by Fort Bragg.
