UpperEx Outreach Coalition Receives Nonprofit Status

The UpperEx National Outreach Coalition, based in Minneapolis, Minnesota, recently was granted nonprofit status from the federal government, the coalition announced. The 501c3 status now enables this organization, whose mission is dedicated to upper-extremity amputees, to seek tax-deductible donations and grants to fund its programs and initiatives.

The foundation has scheduled recreational activities in 2007 to help amputees enjoy sports and to gain a comfort with new activities, while learning from other amputees and professionals, according to UpperEx. Regional events scheduled thus far in 2007 include trap shoots in Wisconsin and Kansas and a golf tournament in Ohio.

The organization has also implemented a Peer Support Network across the United States and is working with hospitals, rehabilitation facilities, prosthetic labs, and other organizations around the country to make certain that arm amputees have the programs and services they need to live a full and healthy life.

Eric Westover, chairman, said, "We are dedicated to those affected by an upper-extremity amputation or limb deficiency, and we serve not only the amputee, but also their families by providing support and services to maintain a healthy, active, full lifestyle.& The community we are forming includes amputees, both new and existing, as well as their families, and those in the medical community and orthotic and prosthetic industries."
