Midwest One Arm Trap Shoot, Shooting Clinic Slated for June 8-10

The Midwest One Arm Trap Shoot and Shooting Clinic, hosted by the UpperEx National Outreach Coalition, is scheduled for June 8-10 in Great Bend, Kansas.

The UpperEx National Outreach Coalition, based in Minneapolis, Minnesota, is a 501(c)(3) organization dedicated to facilitating positive outcomes for upper-extremity amputees.

The Trap Shoot and Shooting Clinic is for those with an upper-limb loss or difference and their families, said Chairman Eric Westover, a below-elbow amputee. The event will include a shooting clinic conducted by Jim Canfield, an above-elbow amputee, world-class competition shooter, and a hunter training instructor for the state of Kansas. The clinic is open to all who have a desire to learn how to shoot or want to improve their shooting skills in a structured environment, Westover said.

Activities planned for Friday, June 8, include a golf tournament, trap shoot, and a pool party social event. Activities on Saturday, June 9, include a skeet shoot competition, shooting clinic, and an evening social.

"We are dedicated to those affected by an upper-extremity amputation or limb deficiency, and we serve not only the amputee, but their families by providing support, services, and events to maintain a healthy, active, full lifestyle like everybody else," Westover said. "Organizing an event like the Midwest Shoot provides a community-building opportunity and a way to open the lines of communication by bringing people with similar experiences together. Participants get a chance to network, share ideas, learn a new hobby, and just have some plain old fun."

Westover said the organization has reserved a block of rooms for a group rate of $65 a night at the Best Western Angus Inn, 2920 10th Street, Great Bend, KS 67530-4260, phone: 620.792.3541; fax: 620.792.8621. Persons interested in attending should call the hotel directly to reserve a room and mention that they are with the UpperEx event.

The community UpperEx is forming includes arm amputees, as well as their families and those in the medical community and orthotic and prosthetic industries, Westover said. The board of directors, most of whom are amputees, come from around the United States to help the foundation promote awareness, advocate for amputee needs, provide vital social programs and services, and to raise funds. Westover invites inquiries from amputees, their families, sponsors, and donors.
