Researchers at the Fraunhofer Institute for Manufacturing
Engineering and Automation IPA in Stuttgart, Germany, have used the
trunk of an elephant as its design model for a bionic robot arm. An
elephant’s long and agile trunk–endowed with more than 40,000
muscles–combines power capable of tearing down trees with the
ability to perform delicate tasks.
