RMC Pakistan to Offer BSc in O&P

The Rawalpindi Medical College (RMC), Rawalpindi, Pakistan, and allied hospitals have finalized four-year bachelor of science (BSc) programs in different medical technologies including orthotics and prosthetics.

The BSc programs will be affiliated with the University of Health Sciences (UHS), Lahore in Pakistan.

"The classes will start on January 1," BSc Program Coordinator Dr. Naveed Iftikhar Maken said.

According to RMC officials, the program is unique because its main focus is on modern technologies, including physical therapy and physical medicine.

Pakistan has a limited number of professional prosthetists/orthotists with hands-on expertise in the art of preparing and fitting artificial limbs and physiatry.

Two of the courses being offered in the program--physiotherapy and orthotics and prosthetics--will help to improve the quality of work involving prosthetic processes in hospitals, said Dr. Maken.

Health experts serving at Rawalpindi General Hospital, Holy Family Hospital, and District Headquarters Hospital (Civil Hospital) said that the program is the first of its kind in this part of the country and will help to enhance the quality of the work being done in hospitals.

According to Dr. Maken, the BSc program practical in nature, and various departments in allied hospitals will be used for teaching purposes.
