OPAF Receives, Awards Grant

The Orthotic & Prosthetic Assistance Fund (OPAF) recently awarded a grant of nearly $600 to the Adventure Amputee Camp (AAC) in Bryson City, North Carolina, and received another grant from the United States Golf Association (USGA).

OPAF's gift to AAC covers the cost for one child to attend the camp for one week, July 9-13. "These funds from OPAF will allow us to provide a camping challenge for young people who are living with limb loss or absence," said Melissa Wolff-Burke, the camp's director. "All funds donated will be used directly by AAC to provide for transportation, housing, food, recreational activities, and other expenses of the camp itself."

OPAF will hold a First Volley adaptive tennis clinic at AAC on July 10. "We are very pleased to be able to participate with AAC and give these young people a chance to try out their tennis skills and drills," OPAF Executive Director Robin Burton said.

OPAF also announced that it has received a $3,000 grant from the USGA that will assist the work of the First Swing adaptive golf clinics. OPAF works in conjunction with the National Amputee Golf Association to host First Swing clinics across the country. These grant monies will help the organization host six First Swing clinics in 2008.

"We are very grateful for these funds as they will allow us to host more First Swing clinics," Burton said. "First Swing offers adaptive golf instruction from qualified instructors and uses adaptive techniques so that anyone can enjoy the game and socialization aspects of golf."
