In northern Thailand, accidents, landmine explosions, and snake
bites are among the most common mishaps that lead to lower-limb
amputations, and many of the people who experience them are poor
farmers who labor in muddy hillside fields and animal pens,
according to muantae.com, the visitor site of the city of Chiang
Mai, Thailand. One man has transformed the lives of thousands of
poor Thais by inventing, producing, and distributing a low-cost,
durable foot prosthesis. He was honored this year with a Ramon
Magsaysay Award, considered by some as the “Asian Nobel Prize.”
