A new prosthetics project has been given a leg up to the tune of
$1.6 million in federal funding, thanks to U.S. Sen. John Kerry
(D-MA) and U.S. Rep. James McGovern, (D-MA). Liberating
Technologies, Holliston, Massachusetts, defense contractor
Foster-Miller, Waltham, Massachusetts, and Innersea Technologies,
Bedford, Massachusetts, will collaborate to create a new type of
microprocessor-controlled leg and knee. Kerry and McGovern stated
that securing the current round of funding for the project had been
a hard fight. At an event in Holliston to celebrate the grant,
Kerry commented, “This is part of the fulfillment of our obligation
to our veterans…. Words come easily, but the money and the deeds
don’t come as easily.” According to the Metro West Daily
News, this latest infusion of cash is the project’s third
round of federal funding in the last few years, bringing the total
to $5 million.
