The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) has
announced the final five Medicare Administrative Contractors
(MACs), companies that have been awarded contracts to process and
pay Medicare Part A and Part B claims for services provided under
the Medicare Fee-for-Service program. The 15 total Part A and B
MACs will become the contact for all Medicare providers and
physicians, and will take over the claims payment work now
performed by numerous fiscal intermediaries and carriers. The MAC
contracts, which have an approximate value of $1.4 billion over
five years, will fulfill the requirements of the contracting reform
provisions of the Medicare Prescription Drug, Improvement, and
Modernization Act of 2003 (MMA).
