CMS to Deny Elastic Orthoses as Noncovered

Noridian Administrative Services, the Durable Medical Equipment
Medicare Administrative Contractor (DME MAC) for Jurisdiction D,
announced on January 20 that Medicare will stop covering
elastic-style orthoses on April 1, 2009. The announcement says,
“CMS has determined that elastic garments do not meet the statutory
definition of a brace because they are not rigid or semi-rigid
devices.”
