The American Academy of Orthotists and Prosthetists (the Academy) has voted to make a $5,000 donation to the Red Cross toward immediate assistance for earthquake-ravaged Haiti. The organization has also committed to work long term with groups such as Healing Hands for Haiti (HHH) that will be providing O&P care in the country.
“The devastation in Haiti is unimaginable,” Peter D. Rosenstein, Academy executive director, wrote in a letter to Academy members. “We understand that nearly 70 amputations a day are being performed and are asking that all of our members look into their hearts and do whatever you can to support the people of Haiti.”
Rosenstein noted that current relief efforts urgently need cash to bring supplies into the country and that “in the coming days and even years people with the unique skills of our members will be needed by the people of Haiti.” He concluded, “We urge you to choose the group you would like to support with your time and money and to remember that this will be a long road to recovery for the Haitians.”
