OPIE Software, Gainesville, Florida, announced that it has developed a method by which its software users will never have to manually check the Provider Enrollment, Chain, and Ownership System (PECOS) status of their referring physicians. Each night, using the data provided by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS), OPIE will automatically scan the customers’ referring-physician database and mark all physicians who have a valid NPI number as either PECOS-enrolled or not. OPIE users can then run a report that will show them all of the physicians who are not enrolled in PECOS so that they can follow-up with those physicians. Additionally, when new prescriptions are entered into the system, OPIE will warn the user if the referring physician on the prescription is not enrolled in PECOS.
“When CMS released the PECOS list as a PDF file with more than 13,000 pages, we knew we had to do something to make this easier for our users,” said Paul Prusakowski, CPO, FAAOP, CEO of OPIE Software. “Fortunately, we were just in the process of testing a new system that allows us to get certain kinds of software updates out to our users very quickly. As a result, we were able to develop the automated PECOS functionality and deploy it to nearly 200 OPIE facilities all in a matter of days.”
