The American Board for Certification in Orthotics, Prosthetics & Pedorthics (ABC) has released its updated Orthotics, Prosthetics and Pedorthics Scope of Practice. According to ABC, the Scope of Practice is reviewed periodically by a group of certified orthotists, prosthetists, and pedorthists to ensure its relevancy to the profession and it is intended to help ABC-credentialed individuals define the parameters of their patient care. A copy of the Scope of Practice is available for download at ABC’s website. Changes to the new Scope of Practice include the addition of a comprehensive definition of supervision and privileging of non-credentialed caregivers, as well as a supervision matrix for custom-fabricated and custom fit-high levels of care.
“It was my privilege to serve as chairman of ABC’s Scope of Practice Committee,” said Rick Parr, CPO, FAAOP. “The material covered impacts accreditation standards, state licensure standards, educational curriculum, and ABC’s certification exams. The Scope of Practice will continue to be periodically updated as the practice of orthotics, prosthetics, and pedorthics continues to evolve.”
