Angela Montgomery, CPO, practice manager of the Hanger Prosthetics & Orthotics facility in Boulder, Colorado, joined with friends and colleagues and shaved her head on April 10 to raise funds for childhood cancer research through the St. Baldrick’s Foundation. The Foundation holds events across the country in which volunteers shave their heads to raise money for childhood cancer research. In 2010 alone, the foundation has already raised more than $16,690,000. Montgomery, 32, and her team have raised more than $2,700 and are still accepting donations.
“Some of you knew Andy Horner,” Montgomery wrote on her St. Baldrick’s fundraising page. “He was one of my best childhood friends that battled cancer, then the complications of cancer treatment his entire life. I learned a lot from Andy and continue to do so even after his death. He continues to be with me and is my reason for wanting to find a cure for childhood cancer.”
According to its website, the St. Baldrick’s Foundation is the world’s largest volunteer-driven fundraising event for childhood cancer research. The foundation uses the funds raised at the events throughout the year to fund researchers working toward new and better treatments for pediatric cancer. Since its inception in 2000, the foundation has raised nearly $70 million through head-shaving events in all 50 U.S. states, the District of Columbia, and 24 countries.
