Two prosthetists have been featured on ABC’s Extreme Makeover: Home Edition. The May 2 episode of the show, which brings designers, guest stars, and contractors together to renovate or replace the broken-down home of a family in need, showcased the life of the Carr family of Minneola, Texas, which adopted four Kazak children with physical disabilities, including two with amputations. As the ABC team, including host Ty Pennington, demolished the Carr’s hazardous, inaccessible house and built a new one in its place, they also helped individual members of the Carr family to achieve their goals. The family’s youngest daughter, Ryanne, 7, is a triple amputee who wanted to send her pairs of outgrown legs to child amputees in Haiti.
Eric Neufeldt, CPO, who was in Haiti with the Range of Motion Project (ROMP), and Craig Gavras,
executive director of the Limbs for Life Foundation, took Ryanne’s outgrown legs and were shown revamping the devices to fit a Haitian girl, whose first post-amputation steps were shown on the show.
During the rebuild, the Carrs were also sent on a vacation to Hawaii, where they received surfing lessons with world-ranked surfer Bethany Hamilton , who returned to competition after losing an arm to a shark attack seven years ago.
