At the Bank of America’s Chicago Marathon, where a record 36,159 runners toughed it out to the finish, Richard Whitehead of Great Britain crossed the tape in 2:42:52, the fastest-ever marathon for a lower-limb amputee, according to an Össur press release. Whitehead shaved three minutes from his own previous world-record time.
Since his first marathon in New York in 2004, the 34-year-old congenital amputee and Nottingham native has managed to cut more than two hours from his marathon time.
“To say I’m delighted is the understatement of the year!” Whitehead said of his achievement. “It was a tough race, as the conditions were really hot, but I’m so pleased to have clocked that time.”
