John “Jack” A. Mitchell Sr., LPO, passed away on July 6 at Morristown Memorial Hospital, New Jersey. He was 73.
For the past 26 years, Mitchell was a licensed prosthetist/orthotist at the Garden State Orthopaedic Center, working at its Morristown and Oakland, New Jersey, facilities. Prior to that, he worked at Kessler Associates, East Orange, New Jersey, for 28 years. Mitchell was also a member of the American Orthotic & Prosthetic Association (AOPA).
Garden State Orthopaedic Center issued this statement: “Jack was a dear friend to us all at Garden State Orthopaedic, providing orthotic and prosthetic care to patients for over 26 years…. Jack had great hand skills, and there was nothing he couldn’t make or repair, starting in this field when sockets were still carved from wood blocks. Most importantly, Jack was a man who cared deeply about his patients. If there were emergency repairs or adjustments needed, Jack was there and did whatever it took to get patients comfortable and ambulatory. A man of impeccable skills and moral commitment, Jack will be missed by all who have had the honor to come in contact with him.”
Mitchell is survived by his wife of 48 years Kathleen; son John Jr. (Lori); daughter Kathleen Caffrey (Matthew Winnans); three grandchildren, Kaitlyn, Shannon, and Matthew Jr.; former son-in-law Jeff Caffrey; sister Gail Adamo; and brother James. He was predeceased by his sister Mickey Mitchell.
