The American Orthotic & Prosthetic Association (AOPA) has announced a request for pilot grant proposals in five potential areas of O&P research. For 2012-2013, AOPA is seeking proposals for one-time grants in amounts up to $15,000 for one year. The study must be completed within one year of the date of the award. The deadline for proposals is Monday, April 30, 2012.
Areas for submission are:
- Microprocessor knee: Stumble recovery benefit for non-variable cadence ambulators, and does restricted access for K1 and K2 to hydraulic controls adversely impact patient safety?
- Validity of energy storing feet: Transfemoral/transtibial, clinical appropriateness and efficacy of dynamic response feet for K3 patients, and defining appropriate levels of variable cadence.
- TLSO: Reduction of fall and/or injury related to different types of spinal devices post surgery.
- Socket Interface: Methods for measuring proper socket fit and alignment.
- Vacuum-assisted socket suspension systems.
Top-quality clinical O&P research topics beyond the above priorities will also be considered.
O&P professionals and physicians in training (interns, residents, and fellows) are eligible to apply, provided that the work is conducted under the preceptorship of a more senior or experienced investigator.
Awardees will be selected based on the proposal’s feasibility, scientific and clinical significance, originality, and anticipated contribution of the research to clinical practice. Applications will also be evaluated on the availability of adequate resources, including personnel and facilities. AOPA and the Center for O&P Learning & Evidence-Based Practice (COPL) will give preference to grants that address evidence-based clinical application in O&P.
