The First Dive Intro to Scuba and First Paddle Kayaking clinics returned, for the third time, to the pool facilities of Eastern Michigan University (EMU), Ypsilanti, Michigan, on April 15. The clinics, sponsored by Becker Orthopedic, Troy, Michigan; Ropp Orthopedic Clinic, Commerce, Michigan; and nonprofit SOAR-Special Opportunities in Advanced Rehabilitation, offered introductory adaptive instruction for anyone with a physical challenge. The coordination of these clinics was overseen by Emily Irvine Rau, a graduate assistant at the EMU Orthotic-Prosthetic Programs.
The five-hour afternoon event saw a dozen participants enjoy the opportunity to try scuba and kayaking. Scuba instruction and equipment was coordinated and provided by Joe Cloutier and the volunteer staff from Huron Scuba, Ann Arbor, Michigan. Kayaking instruction and equipment was provided, in part, by Athletes with Disabilities Network (AND) as well as local volunteers and kayaking enthusiasts.
