The Pedorthic Foundation has announced the establishment of a new scholarship in memory of Heather Moore Bernard, who passed away November 17, 2011, at the age of 30. Bernard was the daughter and business partner of Pedorthic Foundation President Jim Moore, CPed.
“Heather spent many hours in the store growing up, helping wherever she was needed,” Moore said. “[She was] my only child, my best friend, and my business partner.”
It is the Pedorthic Foundation’s first scholarship that will be used for other than pre-certification courses, Moore said. The scholarship will be available to certified pedorthists and individuals who work in a shoe store that offers pedorthic services. It can be used for continuing education for certified pedorthists, footwear-related programs for certified pedorthists and non-credentialed individuals, or for educational programs sponsored by the National Shoe Retailers Association and also the United Shoe Retailers Association, just to name a few.
A scholarship committee is working on the application, and is expected to be available soon, Moore said. The Pedorthic Foundation says it hopes to award the scholarship during its annual Pedorthic Footcare Association Symposium in Little Rock, Arkansas, in November.
The scholarship will be funded by private donations, and most likely will be in the $250 to $1,000 range, similar to other foundation scholarships, Moore said.
