The U.S. Army has appointed Colonel Greg Gadson to serve as commander of Fort Belvoir, Virginia. He will be the first bilateral amputee to command an Army post.
Gadson, who has been in the U.S. Army for more than 20 years, sustained transfemoral amputations of both legs in 2007 while commanding U.S. troops in Iraq after the vehicle that he was riding in struck an improvised explosive device. Prior to that, he also serviced during Operation Desert Storm, in Bosnia, and Afghanistan.
Most recently, Gadson served as the director of the U.S. Army Wounded Warrior Program (AW2), which he has run since 2010, and for which work he received a Legion of Merit award.
