The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) will begin enforcement action against any covered entity that is required to but has not yet complied with the updated transactions standards adopted under the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 (HIPAA): ASC X12 Version 5010 and NCPDP Versions D.0 and 3.0.
The compliance date for upgrading to Version 5010 standards for electronic health transactions was January 1, but CMS extended the enforcement discretion period through June 30.
An April proposed rule that would delay the compliance date for the transition from International Classification of Diseases (ICD)-9 to ICD-10 codes from October 1, 2013 to October 1, 2014, is still under review.
