The United States Tennis Association (USTA) Serves program has awarded OPAF an $8,000 grant to further its First Volley Adaptive Tennis Clinics, which have served 150-200 youths with disabilities since 2005.
“We’ve been offering the clinics to anyone with a physical challenge, both ambulatory and wheelchair players,” said Robin Burton, executive director of OPAF. “First Volley offers these participants a chance to try tennis with instructors who have been trained to work with our population of amputees, children with cerebral palsy, stroke and brain injury survivors, and more.”
OPAF has partnered with Shriners Hospitals for Children locations to bring adaptive tennis instruction to their patients but recently expanded its reach to partner with any children’s hospital across the country and bring First Volley to them.
