On August 10, Hector Picard became the first person with bilateral upper-limb amputations to complete the Ironman U.S. Championship triathlon in New York, New York.
Picard, racing on behalf of the I Will Foundation, completed the 140.6-mile event-consisting of a 2.4-mile swim, 112-mile bicycle ride, and a 26.2-mile marathon-in 16:42. According to the Ironman website, he logged 59:53 for the 2.4-mile swim in the Hudson River, it took him 8:20:45 minutes to complete the ride portion of the event, and 6:51:35to complete the run.
Picard lost his arms in 1992 after a workplace accident. He has completed more than 60 triathlons since he first started competing in 2009.
