The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) has released the 2014 durable medical equipment, prosthetics, orthotics, and supplies fee schedule fee schedule, which is effective January 1. According to a press release from the American Orthotic & Prosthetic Association (AOPA), existing Medicare fees for Healthcare Common Procedure Coding System (HCPCS) codes have been increased by 1 percent.
AOPA also stated that of particular interest are the fee schedule amounts that were established for the 23 new HCPCS codes that were created to describe off-the-shelf (OTS) orthoses and the HCPCS codes with changed verbiage to indicate they are either OTS or are required to be “trimmed, bent, molded, assembled, or otherwise customized to fit a specific patient by an individual with expertise.” The fee schedule for these codes are the same regardless of whether they are classified as OTS or require specific fitting and are consistent with the fee schedule amounts for 2013 subject to the 1 percent increase, AOPA said.
