The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) revised MLN Matters article SE1409, titled “Medicare Fee-For-Service (FFS) International Classification of Diseases, 10th Edition (ICD-10) Testing Approach.” The revision, published February 27, adds information about the testing in preparation for use of the new code set. All entities covered by the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) will be required to transition to ICD-10, which will be effective for dates of service on and after October 1, 2014.
The four-pronged approach includes the following:
- CMS internal testing of its claims processing systems.
- Provider-initiated Beta testing tools.
- Acknowledgement testing.
- End-to-end testing.
