The Amputee Coalition announced that Ashby (AJ) Henningsen, 20, of Baltimore, Maryland, is the 2014-2015 recipient of the $1,000 Christina Skoski, MD, Scholarship. Henningsen is an honors student at the University of Maryland, Baltimore, who was born with a congenital limb difference. He was a National Merit Commended Student, a Princeton Book Award winner, and a Christus Honors graduate. His high school co-curricular activities included varsity baseball and cross-country running, playing lead trumpet in school concerts and jazz bands, and being second chair in the Maryland Youth Symphony Orchestra at the Peabody Conservatory, Baltimore. He has also went on mission trips with his church youth group and volunteered at a Baltimore food pantry.
Based on her conviction that limb loss should not be a barrier to academic or professional success, Dr. Christina Skoski established the $25,000 scholarship fund in 2009. “On behalf of the Amputee Coalition, we are very pleased to announce AJ as the recipient of this prestigious award,” said Sue Stout, interim president and CEO. “AJ is truly a well-rounded student and is also philanthropic with his time. He serves as a role model for his peers and we are proud to award him this scholarship for demonstrating excellence in the classroom and in the community.”
