The Amputee Coalition has named three new members to its Scientific & Medical Advisory Committee (SciMAC). Deb Velez, BSN, MN, GNP; David G. Armstrong, DPM, MD, PhD; and Carol A. Miller, PT, PhD, GCS, will join the committee this month for a three-year term.

Velez will serve as the nursing representative on the committee. She is the Prevention of Amputation in Veterans Everywhere (PAVE) coordinator at the VA San Diego Healthcare System, La Jolla, California, and has more than 40 years of nursing experience.

Armstrong will serve as the podiatry representative on the committee. He is a professor of surgery at the University of Arizona College of Medicine, Tucson, and founder and director of the Southern Arizona Limb Salvage Alliance (SALSA).

Miller will serve as the physical therapy/rehabilitation representative on the committee. She is the department head and professor of the doctorate program in physical therapy at the University of North Georgia, Dahlonega.

Departing members of the committee are Steve Wegener, PhD; Bob Gailey, PhD, PT; and Nancy Payne, MSN, RN.

“I would like to thank our outgoing members of the SciMAC committee for their dedication and the many years of service they have given to the limb loss community and our organization,” said Sue Stout, interim president and CEO of the Amputee Coalition. “At the same time, I would like to welcome the new members; we appreciate their sharing their experience and expertise to help our constituents.”

SciMAC contributes clinical and scientific expertise in the development, implementation and evaluation of Amputee Coalition programs, research, and policy initiatives.
