Re: ferrier coupler and heavier clients – RESPONSES

Catherine McConnell

Hi again –
The replies I received to my question are listed below; all were positive. Thank you!
Catherine

They seem to be some type of aluminum alloy, so they get pretty dinged up, but I have put them on patients involved in sports and have not had a failure (yet). I can’t speak to the 300# but my most active is a B/L AK who is up to 240# now and plays all sports including foot ball (defensive back so lots of tackling at speed). He has worn the same pair of Ferrier couplers through several socket/knee/feet changes and they look rough but are still intact.

Haven’t had one break yet! Have him sign a waver

I have used ferrier couplings on super active and really big folks with no problem.

You can trust this coupling as long as you integrate it properly.

Bottom line, how compliant is the patient?
If a reliable, and informed, individual than I would trust the mechanism, stress that it must be secured but not overly tightened.

I am a very active 225 lb transfemoral amputee. My current ferrier coupler is 5 years old, and I have never had an issue. I know I’m a little lighter than your pt., but I hope this helps with your decision.

I have them on very active guys up to 380

Subject: ferrier coupler and heavier clients

Hi Everyone –
I’d like to use a Ferrier coupler on a young, 300 pound active transtibial client. I understand that that manufacturer reports no weight limit on this product. Has anyone had any problems using this component on clients like this?
Thank you in advance!
