Vacuum Assisted Suspension Evidence Does Exist

Jason Kahle

Dear List,
The Proposed LCD changes States, “Active suction is created by using a suction pump as part of the socket design (L5781, L5782). Active suction systems claim to improve residual limb volume management and moisture evacuation. In addition, active systems claim to increase suspension, proprioception and improve gait. There is insufficient published clinical evidence to support these claims. Claims for L5781 and L5782 will be denied as not reasonable and necessary.”

I do not believe this is true and collaborated with M. Jason Highsmith, PhD, DPT, CP and AAOP President, Otto Bock and Willow Wood to prepare a document (VAS EVIDENCE ) that has been included in AAOP and the O&P Alliance’s written response to these proposed changes. All OP Clinics should have this evidence regarding VAS, and actively use it as part of good evidence based practice.
Enjoy,

Jason T. Kahle, MSMS, CPO, FAAOP
