Orthotics and Autistic children who toe walk

Furgal, Karen

I am a pediatric physical therapist and the question of using orthotic intervention to treat severe toe walking in children with autism is debated regularly by therapists. Physical therapists are quite often asked this by parents and it is a difficult question to answer. I have performed a literature search using Pubmed and CINAHL data bases without finding any evidence that directly addresses this problem. I am curious to learn what the criteria for bracing is regionally, since this is such a difficult cohort of children to manage with regard to toe walking. Thank you very much.
Sincerely,
Karen Furgal, PT, DPT, PCS
