Harry Phillips

Call for papers: Combined NC/SC Chapters of the American Academy of
Orthotists and Prosthetists Scientific Meeting

October 20-22, 2011, Ballantyne Resort, Charlotte NC

The closing date for the submission of abstracts is August 1, 2011.

Through a variety of speakers presenting in areas relevant to current
O&P practices this meeting aims to provide practical technical and
logistical information to orthotic and prosthetic practioners in the
North Carolina/South Carolina region.

The North Carolina Chapter strongly encourages Prosthetic and Orthotic
Residents in the North Carolina/South Carolina area to submit their
Residency research projects for consideration for presentation. The
Chapter is currently considering an award for the best Resident Research
Project as determined by the Meeting Content Committee. Residency
research projects need not relate to any of the described themes or
areas of interest.

The major themes planned for this year’s meeting are:

amputee sports and fitness

bracing for spasticity

scoliosis

elevated vacuum

carbon fiber brace design

The Chapter invites you to submit abstracts for the 2011 meeting to
allow for discussion among professionals of current practices within the
field. Submissions related to all of the themes are encouraged.
Subtopics of interest include, but are not limited to:

activities and/or groups for amputee sports or fitness

differing socket designs for increased activity/increased impact

decisions affecting component choices for active amputees

new approaches to bracing for spasticity

managing internal rotation with spasticity

use of dynamic response joints in contracture and tone

scoliosis outcomes

use of limited wear bracing for scoliosis

scoliosis bracing for pediatric wheelchair users

use of elevated vacuum sockets

fabrication techniques with elevated vacuum

challenges in using elevated vacuum

use of carbon fiber materials in bracing

pre-preg carbon fiber/kevlar/glass materials use in bracing

fabrication with pre-preg materials, equipment, technique, etc.

Presentations not related to the described topics will be appropriately
reviewed as well and placed as appropriate.

Case studies: if you have recently treated patients in an area related
to one of the themes, or have tried new methods or a new approach to
treatment, we encourage you to present a case study. Regardless of
outcome, case studies provide an opportunity to share what you have
learned, spark new thinking, and open discussion on topics of interest
to our fields. This is also a great opportunity to present a tough case
that you are currently working on as to see if others may have new ideas
or suggestions that may help.

Submission abstracts and questions regarding the meeting content should
be sent to Carin Caves, CO at [email protected]
