Below is my original post followed by the responses I received. Thank you for the input. As always this Listserv is a great resource. Eddie

We are in the process of fabricating a new sholder cap type prostheses for a interthoracic amputee. We have fabricated them in the past utilyzing acrylic laminations. He is wondering if there are any new materials that would be cooler, still strong enough to provide protection and be easy to keep clean. Any ideas would be appreciated.

Thank you in advance.

Responses:

I expect you have already considered large windows or a frame style construction. Perhaps even vent holes may make him feel cooler. I don’t know of any new “cooler” construction materials.

I would suggest you think about his interface, which I gather is some kind of undershirt, or limb fabric style. Look to your manufacturer’s and see what is available.
The cloth materials have advanced dramatically such as “cool max”, and comfort sock technology
cloth with silver in the weave that claims to be cooler, and not harbor bacteria.
I do not make the fabric selection as a lightly to be considered option. To go further see if KnitRite may make you a special. I know some old style labs. have there own design considerations made up just for them. Are they proprietary I do not know. I know individual companies who have grown up from the old school think call the manufacturer direct creating an extension of their own office talent with no additional cost. Most suppliers who understand the seriousness we take into our patient care are delighted to be included for a consult, or in developing a new product.
Recently I have had some great results from the “Dr.Comfort” company who weave a “NANO BAMBOO CHARCOLAL FIBER” into their socks along with extra design features that hold the sock around the foot with a stitched pattern around the dorsum of the foot. In addition to that feature they add extra padding to the sock’s sole. I hope you can find a manufacturer to help with your quest since it is a common request for most prosthetic or orthotic wears who want a cooler interface. Can it be we have another membership specialty to add to O the P world of membership organizations. Maybe we could all get a write in campaign when we send in our dues to ABC, or BOC to get Dr. Comfort certified as a “Socksetist”. Now what are the workman’s compensation rates to hire a “Socksetist” going for these days?
