Prosthetic Thumb

Doug Wacker

I have a patient who has had his non-dominant right thumb amputated as a result of a shotgun/hunting accident. His amputation is at the CMC joint of the thumb/wrist. His Occupational therapist fabricated a temporary prosthesis out of materials to allow him to function. It is not in the typical prehension position.

I am interested in what types of designs and fabrication there are for a functional type of thumb prosthesis with Velcro wrist closures. He has been back hunting since and wants to continue the season. He is not interested in a cosmetic silicone prosthesis. There is Medicare insurance only.

All suggestions will be greatly appreciated.
