Semmes-Weinstein Monofilament test

Dear all,

In an effort to improve my assessment of diabetic shoe patients I am exploring the option of giving the Semmes-Weinstein monofilament test to ascertain neuropathy. does anyone have experience with giving of this test? Does each test get new filament or are they used repeatedly? Is this even within our level of evaluation, being left to referring physician? As there is an expense that is non-reimbursable, is this our responsibility? In light of changes by CMS regarding evaluation beginning July 1, thought I’d ask.

Thanks for any thoughts on this issue.
